Listing Hygiene Before You Raise Bids
Cover, title, description, price, categories, and Look Inside decide whether an ad click becomes a sale. A practical checklist for KDP authors to work through before spending another cent on higher bids.
When ads underperform, the instinct is to change the ads: new keywords, higher bids, more campaigns. But an ad only buys a shopper's attention for a moment. What happens next depends entirely on the product page. If the page does not sell, more traffic only makes the loss bigger. Before you raise a single bid, give the listing an honest audit.
Why the listing comes first
Think about the two steps a reader takes. First they see your ad and decide whether to click. Then they see your product page and decide whether to buy or borrow. Your bid influences how often the first step happens. The listing controls both steps: the cover, title, price, and star rating shown in the ad drive the click, and the page drives the purchase.
A rough way to see which step is weak:
- Low click-through rate: shoppers see the ad and pass. The cover, title, or price in the ad is not drawing them.
- Decent click-through but few sales: shoppers are interested, then leave the page. The description, reviews, Look Inside, or price is not closing.
Both are listing problems. Neither is fixed by bidding more.
The checklist
Cover
The cover is the ad. At thumbnail size, on a phone, next to a dozen other books, it must say "this is the genre you want" within a second.
- Does it look like current bestsellers in your exact subgenre, not the broad genre?
- Is the title readable at thumbnail size?
- Does it match reader expectations for tone, such as cozy, dark, steamy, literary, or practical?
If a cover redesign is not possible right now, at least compare yours side by side with the top twenty books in your main category. Readers buy what looks familiar enough to trust.
Title and subtitle
For fiction, the series name and number, shown clearly, help readers understand what they are getting. For nonfiction, the subtitle should state the benefit in the reader's language. Avoid stuffing keywords into the title field. Amazon's rules prohibit it, and readers notice.
Description
The first two or three lines matter most, because that is what shows before "Read more."
- Open with the hook, not with praise or background.
- Use short paragraphs and, where it helps, bold text for the key line. KDP supports simple formatting in the description.
- For fiction, make the genre and tropes obvious. For nonfiction, make the problem and promised outcome obvious.
- End with what kind of reader will love it.
Look Inside
Many shoppers who reach the page read the opening. Make sure the first pages are the story or the substance, not a long run of front matter. Move acknowledgments, long dedications, and detailed tables of contents to the back where you can.
Price
Compare your price with the top books in your subgenre and format. A price well above them makes ads harder to profit from because conversion falls. A price well below them can signal low quality in some genres. For ebooks, remember that the 70% royalty option applies within a set price range, which affects your break-even.
Categories and keywords
KDP lets you choose up to three categories and seven keyword fields. Choose categories where your book genuinely belongs and could plausibly rank. Use the keyword fields for phrases readers search that are not already in your title. These do not change your ads directly, but they shape where the book appears organically, and better organic placement makes every ad sale more valuable.
Reviews
You cannot buy or solicit reviews in ways Amazon prohibits, and you should not try. You can make sure readers who finish the book are reminded, in the back matter, that a review helps. If the book has very few ratings, expect lower conversion from ads than you will see later, and keep bids modest until the count grows.
A+ Content
KDP allows A+ Content, the images and text modules that appear below the description. It can help, especially for nonfiction and for series, where a module can show the reading order. Keep it simple and readable on a phone.
Formats
If a shopper clicks an ad for your ebook and sees a paperback and audiobook linked on the same page, the page looks more established. Make sure all formats are linked correctly in KDP, and fix any broken series pages.
How to tell if your fixes worked
Change one or two things at a time, keep ads steady, and compare conversion over the next two to four weeks with the previous period.
Conversion rate = orders ÷ clicks (and, for Kindle Unlimited books, pages read per click)
If conversion improves, every bid you place becomes more valuable. A book that converts 1 in 8 clicks instead of 1 in 15 can afford almost twice the bid at the same profit. That is the point of doing this first: listing work raises your affordable bid more than any bidding tactic can.
Common traps
- Changing the cover, the description, and the price in the same week. You will not know which change helped.
- Rewriting a description that is not the problem. If click-through is the weak step, look at the cover first.
- Discounting to rescue a weak listing. A lower price can increase sales briefly but does not fix a cover or description that is not working.
- Raising bids to compensate for poor conversion. This is the most expensive mistake on the list.
