Questions
How long can each KDP keyword box be?
Each of the seven boxes holds up to 50 characters. You can use a short phrase or several words; readers don't have to type them in order for the words to count.
Should I repeat words from my title in the keywords?
Usually not. Amazon already indexes your title, subtitle and author name, so those boxes are better spent on new words: setting, character types, tropes and tone.
What words aren't allowed?
KDP's guidance says to avoid quality claims such as "bestselling", time-sensitive words like "on sale" or "free", Amazon program names like Kindle Unlimited, quotation marks, HTML, and the names of other authors or books.
Are the category suggestions exact?
They are places to look, not guarantees. Category names change and vary by marketplace, so confirm each path in KDP's category picker. KDP lets you choose up to three.
Does this use AI or search volume data?
It uses AI to suggest the keyword phrases, subtitles and category paths from your book details, then checks every box against KDP's rules (50 characters, no title words, no banned terms). It does not use search volume data and never shows invented numbers. If the AI is busy or today's free AI allowance is used up, it falls back to built-in genre phrase lists and says so. Test each phrase in Amazon's search bar before you use it.
