When should indie authors run Amazon ads?
Indie and KDP authors do not have to run Amazon ads for a book to stay on Kindle. BookAdsAI does not require ads, and it does not tell you that a title must be advertised. Inside this product, ads are relevant when you have a United States Amazon Ads profile you control, you can pay Amazon for the clicks, and you want a daily spend cap plus bounded bid changes on campaigns you allowlist. The starting control is that cap. New books start at $25 a day until you change it. That number is a pause rule, not a promise of sales.
Amazon ads are optional, and they are not KDP
A Kindle book can exist in KDP with no Sponsored Products campaign at all. BookAdsAI does not read the KDP bookshelf, and it does not turn advertising on by itself. Connect, catalog refresh, author lookup, and pasted ASINs all leave Autopilot Paused. Nothing in the import path spends money on Amazon. Spend starts only if campaigns in your Amazon Ads account are already delivering, or if you later enable campaigns yourself in Amazon.
Authors usually look at ads when a book is already for sale on Amazon.com and they are willing to pay for clicks from a US Ads profile. BookAdsAI cannot manage UK, DE, CA, or other marketplaces. If the only campaigns you care about sit on a non-US profile, this version will not run them. If you do not want a tool to pause or rebid anything, leave every book Paused and keep working in the Amazon Ads console.
BookAdsAI also will not decide that a book “should” be advertised because of its category, review count, or rank. The product does not store a rule like that, and it does not forecast royalties. The honest gate is yours: a US profile, a book that belongs to you, campaigns you are willing to put on an allowlist, and a daily cap you can afford because Amazon bills the Ads account.
When BookAdsAI will actually touch a book
Autopilot acts on a book only after several conditions are true at once. You are signed in. A US Amazon Ads profile is connected. The book is on your dashboard because it synced from product ads you own, from a confirmed author lookup, or from an ASIN you pasted as a backup. You set that book to Live. The allowlist contains Amazon campaign IDs. Sync can place IDs from that book’s product ads on the list. If the list is empty, the daily job records a skip and does not change campaigns.
The daily job still waits for a stored report before it spends a bid change or a cap pause. If today’s report for that book is not stored yet, it does not change bids. Run now does not invent a report either. It reviews rows that are already stored. A Paused book is left alone even if reports, campaigns, and a cap all exist. Setting one book Live does not turn on the rest of the catalog.
A campaign named like Launch Recovery is refused even when its ID is on the allowlist. Campaigns that are not on the list are not edited. That is the practical answer to “when should I turn this on”: after the cap and the allowlist look right to you, and only for the books where you want those rules. Live means the rules may run. It does not mean the book will sell.
How to set a starting daily spend cap
Each book has a daily spend cap in US dollars. New books start at $25 until you change the amount on the book page. The add-book form uses the same $25 starting value. The field accepts a whole dollar amount of at least $1. The cap is stored in cents. It is not a keyword bid, and it is not the BookAdsAI subscription.
When today’s reported spend for that book reaches the cap, the daily job pauses the eligible allowlisted campaigns and does not also change bids on that run. You can raise or lower the cap later. Lower it before you set the book Live if $25 is more than you want Amazon to be able to spend on that title in a day. The default is a starting value in the software. It is not a study of what indie authors should spend, and it is not a claim that $25 produces a profit.
Choose the cap from money you can lose on the Ads account. BookAdsAI cannot see your bank balance, your KDP payout, or whether a click will convert. It compares reported spend with the number you saved. If you have several books, each book has its own cap. There is no account-wide budget in this app that pools every title into one dollar amount.
The cap and the subscription are different bills
Public monthly prices are Starter $29, Pro $49, and Agency $99. You pay those amounts to subscribe to BookAdsAI through Stripe. Amazon pays for clicks from the payment method on the Amazon Ads account. A Starter subscription at $29 a month does not include $25 a day of ad spend, and it does not prepay Amazon. Pro at $49 and Agency at $99 do not add ad credit either. The app does not unlock a different cap, a different bid ceiling, or a different catalog because the plan name changed.
Checkout uses the first Stripe price configured on the server, which is typically Starter. Card numbers stay at Stripe. Settings opens the Stripe customer portal so you can cancel the subscription yourself. Canceling billing stops the BookAdsAI subscription. It does not, by itself, delete Amazon campaigns or refund clicks Amazon already charged.
Keep the two numbers apart when you plan a month. The subscription is a software bill. The cap is a pause rule on reported ad spend. Profit on the dashboard is royalties minus ad spend from reports that landed. It does not subtract the Stripe subscription, and it does not predict royalties that have not been reported.
What a starting cap does not do
The cap is not a real-time switch inside Amazon. It runs when the daily job sees a stored report. It cannot undo a click that already happened, and it does not promise that Amazon will stop serving an ad in the same second the cap is crossed. It also does not cap campaigns that are missing from the allowlist. Spend on those campaigns can continue in the Amazon Ads console even while BookAdsAI pauses the campaigns you listed.
The cap does not set keyword bids. Bids move only under the separate bid rule: at least 5 reported clicks, some reported spend, a step of at most 10%, never above $2.50, and never below $0.20. A high cap does not raise the bid ceiling. A low cap does not create keywords. If reports have not landed, neither the cap pause nor a bid change runs, and missing numbers stay zero rather than an estimate.
BookAdsAI does not guarantee that a starting cap will be profitable, that a book will earn back ad spend in royalties, or that a higher plan will make the same cap perform better. You remain responsible for Amazon Ads spend. If you do not want the rules to run, leave the book Paused.
When should a KDP author turn Amazon ads on in BookAdsAI?
Only after a US Amazon Ads profile is connected, the book is one you own, the allowlist has the campaigns you are willing to have changed, and the daily spend cap is an amount you can afford on the Amazon bill. Then set that book Live. Leave it Paused if any of those are not true. BookAdsAI does not require every KDP title to be advertised.
What daily spend cap do new books start with?
New books start at $25 until you change it. When today’s reported spend hits that cap, Autopilot pauses eligible allowlisted campaigns and skips bid changes on that run. The cap does not cover campaigns off the allowlist, and it does not stop a click that Amazon already charged.
Does the BookAdsAI subscription include ad spend?
Public monthly prices are Starter $29, Pro $49, and Agency $99. None of those prices include Amazon click charges. Amazon bills the Ads account. Cancel the software subscription in the Stripe customer portal from Settings.
Can the cap stop a click in the same second it is crossed?
No. The pause runs on the daily job after a report is stored. It is not a promise that Amazon stops the next click immediately. BookAdsAI also cannot undo a click that already happened.
Use BookAdsAI
Create an account, then connect a US Amazon Ads profile from Settings. New books stay Paused until you set a daily spend cap, confirm the allowlist, and turn that book Live.
Profit = royalties − ad spend, from reports that landed. Cancel in Stripe yourself.
